MAID OF HONOR SPEECH

Good Evening,

I’m going to be straying a bit from the traditional maid of honor speech, though not the interpretive dance I promised Molly.

We’re going to be playing a little game you might be familiar with called two truths and a lie. I’m a teacher so this is my go-to ice breaker game.

For those of you that are unfamiliar, here’s how the game goes. I will make three statements about our bride, Molly.  Two of the statements will be true. One of them will be a lie. Your task is to identify which statement is the lie.

Are you ready? All right, here we go.

Number 1: Molly’s best half marathon time was achieved after spending the night out at a bar.

Number 2: Molly’s first job was as a bouncer.

Number 3: Molly said “I love you” first, while watching an episode of New Girl.

Okay, so take a second to think which one of the statements is the lie. And then put your hand up with the number indicating which statement you believe was the lie.

Again, the three statements were:

Number 1: Molly’s best half marathon time was achieved after spending the night out at a bar.

Number 2: Molly’s first job was as a bouncer.

Number 3: Molly said “I love you” to Tuck first, while watching an episode of New Girl.

Okay, it looks like the crowd thinks _________ is the lie.

The right answer…is statement number 3. Let’s talk about the truths first.

Statement #1 is true. Molly did in fact complete her best half-marathon time after a night out in Boston. We stayed out until last call and when I woke up in the morning I had already received a text from Molly after she had finished the race. The rest of us were barely able to walk to brunch, let alone run several miles. Molly, you inspire me with your commitment to personal goals.

Statement #2 is also true. Dressed in a white button down and dress pants with, yes, matching vest and black tie, Molly and I often found ourselves across from one another playing the part of “bouncer” to drunk wedding goers as they made their way from tent to bar trying to smuggle out their half finished drinks. This was a true test to Molly’s patience, particularly when she was tasked with wrestling a half flaming sparkler from an inebriated guest’s hand who was attempting to set the grass on fire. Despite often being mistaken in our outfits for young men, or thoughtfully being called all sorts of names for corralling people without their drinks into the bar, we bonded over the many funny experiences that the Wolfeboro in catering team experienced. Molly’s patience is unwavering in any situation.

So that means that statement #3 is the lie. Molly did not say “I love you” first while watching an episode of New Girl. Tuck did.

It was about 9 months into their relationship and Molly had been waiting patiently to hear those three little words for a while now and in conjunction with the characters in the show, Tuck finally said it.

Molly asked if he was joking in response to the comedic timing of the show but Tuck confirmed that he did, in fact, feel that way. I think this story is a testament to their lighthearted and playful relationship. It is clear to anyone that knows Tuck and Molly that they are perfect for each other.

Molly, you are an incredible friend, sister, daughter, and now wife. Whether it’s setting marathon records or herding drunk wedding guests, I am so thankful for the time we’ve shared together. I am so happy that you have found Tuck, the most wonderful partner.

Tuck, I have loved watching how you care for Molly, rejoicing in her accomplishments, encouraging her, traveling with her, and building the best life together with Nori.

I am so happy for the both of you. I would now ask that everyone raise a glass with me to congratulate the bride and groom.

Congratulations!
